Are Dogs and cats more than children in Japan?
Japan is grappling with a major demographic crisis: a rapidly declining population. According to the 2020 census, Japan's population stood at approximately 123.8 million. Strikingly, the number of children under 15 years old was only about 15.03 million, while registered dogs and cats totaled an astounding 20 million.
The census conducted in October 2025 is believed to be announced in 2026. The number of children is expected to decrease by 2 %, while the number of pets is expected to increase by 0.6%.
